The "Hungry Little Friends" resource focuses on teaching vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and phonological awareness. It is playful, tactile and highly visual. Please note: the word cards are in Portuguese and were designed for Portuguese literacy.
Includes patterns for the macaw (Arara), elephant, Indigenous child, jaguar (Onça), bear (Urso) and little house, plus the artwork file;
The file includes 35 word cards in Portuguese starting with the vowels AEIOU: names, foods, objects, animals, etc.
20 picture cards;
5 vowel cards (AEIOU);
Approx. appliqué sizes: 21 to 29 cm
Approx. picture size: 5x5 cm
Approx. word card size: 9.5x3 cm
Approx. letterform card size: 8x8 cm
Approx. little house size: 47 cm
This resource works for both younger and slightly older children.
Preschool: focus on visual letter recognition and initial sounds (early literacy).
Early primary grades: for extra support or children learning to read who need to strengthen the link between grapheme (letter) and phoneme (sound).
Ways to work with and use the resource:
Playful feeding: The idea is that the characters are hungry and can only eat food that starts with their vowel, turning learning into a game. In Portuguese: Arara eats Abacaxi (pineapple), Elefante eats Ervilha (pea)... and so on.
Phonetic association: The teacher or parent shows a picture (e.g. Abacaxi) and stresses the sound: "AAAA-bacaxi". The child identifies which house shares the same opening sound. Great for ear training even before reading whole words.
Letterform recognition: Practice the four letter forms (print and cursive, uppercase and lowercase).
Vocabulary sorting: Sort the cards into proper names (e.g. Elvis, Aurora), animals and objects, grouping them by first letter.
Memory and attention: Place the cards in a house, remove one without the child seeing, and ask them to spot which of that friend's cards is missing.
Playful sentence building: (For children who are starting to structure their speech or writing)
Pick a character and a "food" card. Ask the child to make up a sentence.
Example: "The Elefante ate the Ervilha (pea)".
This builds creativity and the awareness that words, even those starting with the same letter, play different roles.
